On what ...@Latraviata: Thanks for visiting my blog. On what are you basing your statements about the "beginning of mankind" and the purposes of marriage? When you say that "initially" religion had nothing to do with marriage, upon what are you basing that comment?

Perhaps it wasn't clear from my post, but I believe that the Bible portrays history accurately when it talks of historical events. As near as I can tell, the Bible's account in Genesis is a description of the first marriage. I mean, the VERY first one. So the purpose of that marriage will tell us exactly what marriage "initially" looked like. Whether or not this or that culture believes that marriage has a religious purpose and whether this or that culture sees marriage as a civil institution is neither here nor there with me. I am interested in God's purpose in designing marriage and the methods by which He brings it about. He, Himself, through his Word states that HE created marriage to give mankind a picture of the eternal relationship existing between Christ and His bride, The Church. In that sense, it is religious and nothing else. The fact that all of civilization is built upon families, which come from marriage, does make the institution very important on a civil level, obviously.

To say that marriage is was not instituted by any god is a statement which is impossible to support. The only written account which claims to be the source of marriage is the Bible. If one rejects the biblical account, then one is left with no witness or record of how marriage got started, so it is as likely to have been instituted by a god as not. Were you there? It really makes no sense to say "It didn't happen the way you are saying" without some sort of evidence that it happened some other way. You are free to believe as you wish, but what you are stating is just as much a belief as what I'm stating.

The point of my blog was an appeal to those who CLAIM to believe the Bible to act as though it is true. I have no interest in whether or not pagans and atheists live by the biblical precepts. Nor do I care what pagans and atheists believe about marriage. Aside from its religious value and its existence within a set of moral teachings on sexual relations also set out by God in His Word, marriage serves no purpose whatsoever. Property rights exist apart from marriage and marriage does nothing to define or secure them except as defined within particular legal systems, which could simply state them in some other way exclusive of marriage.subject by designhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10587758866636087935noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6283864000392447042.post-91364481086024905932011-07-05T16:12:33.655-07:002011-07-05T16:12:33.655-07:00Marriage was instituted by God.
